Style Me Vintage!

Hello again, fabulous divas.

So, I recently got a book from the library called “Style Me Vintage!”

It’s basically a step-by-step book on how to style your hair, makeup, and outfit based on a certain era. I’ve been really getting into the vintage look lately, and decided to do a post on that!

FOR STARTERS, I freaking LOVE the 1950s. I love the fashion, the hair, the makeup, the music, and Miss Marilyn Monroe of the silver screen! That was the decade of the hourglass figure…of full skirts, brocade, pearl chokers, long gloves and marvelous cat-eye sunglasses, too!

I honestly believe I would have loved living in this era. “It was a decade of reawakening, rebellion, discovery and progress.”

The whole birth of the 50’s “look” started with Dior’s Corolle Line of 1947. It basically created a tiny-waisted, full-skirted figure that came to represent the iconic feminine look of the 1950’s.

Plus, prints became bold and beautiful! The poodle skirt was born!

In the UK, Queen Elizabeth II became a huge source of fashion inspiration. Her looks were always finished and feminine, topped off with gloves, brooch, and bag, and a lot of women copied her style.

Also, the material “lucite” was very commonly used in expensive, box-style handbags (which were very popular), and sheer, sexy shoes. Shoes were just beginning to transform into something higher, pointier, and slimmer than ever before!

With makeup, it went right along with fashion. More color! Blues, greens, pinks and violets were popular on the eyes, with corals and pinks on the lips. Eyebrows were sharply defined, tans were in style, and blondes were definitely most-favored.

But who can say no to a FREAKING SEXY-AS-FUDGE BRUNETTE?

Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse

This is my first cream-foundation I’ve ever tried, and gurrrll, I must say, it is FABULOUS.

I bought it in a previous Wal-Mart haul, and HAD to share it’s amazingness. Truthfully, I bought it mainly for experimentation.

I got it in the color “Classic Ivory”, which is a perfect match for my fair, neutral skin.

The packaging is sort of wonky, because you’ve got a compact on top for the sponge, THEN a twist-off bottom for the cream product. And no mirror for touch-ups!

But aside from that, the product is GREAT. It provides a smooth, creamy coverage that’s about medium-intensity. The product is very emollient and moisturizing, which is great for dry spots.

DISCLAIMER: Just because the product is called “Mousse” doesn’t mean it’s mousse-like in texture. (It’s not at all!)

Anyways, I ran a couple experiments with this and was quite pleased. On my combo skin, it lasts quite well without powder, which I was really surprised at. The finish is interesting: it’s really luminous but not dewy, sort of like fresh, clean satin.

But anyways, this is truly a wonder. It doesn’t cake, streak, splotch, or oxidize, a problem I have with many drugstore foundations. If you were curious about this product before and it sounds like it’s for you, GO GET IT ASAP. ❤

Among all my fancy high-end lotions, potions, powders, and liquid foundations, this little sucker’s going to squat right in the middle of them all.

I love it.

IT’S GOT THE OFFICIAL GIRLY SEAL OF APPROVAL.

Inspired Outfit

Today, because I was very bored, I decided to piece together an “inspired” outfit. An inspired outfit is basically a look that someone or someTHING inspired me to make!

I just watched “My Week With Marilyn.” Marilyn Monroe is such a classic beauty icon, and wore a lot of gorgeous things. (Short review on the movie: The actress played her extremely well! Check it out when you have the chance!:} )

So, first off, I chose a swimsuit, not a dress, for a more beachy look.

Image

It’s the “Magicsuit Solid Gabby One-Piece Swimsuit” from Soma.  It just has that vintage pin-up feel, and reminds me a lot of one that Marilyn wore! Marilyn+Monroe+black+bathing+suit

Next, I picked out some high heels! It’s all about the shoes, ladies!

Who could rock heels with a swimsuit? Marilyn could!Image

I know everything looks very “basic black”, but Marilyn was the epitome of classic. These are the “High Heel Platform Pumps” from Peltz Shoes.

And last, I chose a pair of black, vintage cat-eye sunglasses from RetroCitySunglasses.   Image

Add some red lipstick, and that’s the cherry on top of a fabulous outfit. ❤

(I like to use MAC’s “MAC Red”.)

Hopefully this outfit wasn’t too boring for you guys!

See you all next time!

How-To: PERFECT Red Lips

Red lips are a truly timeless, amazingly sexy trend. But now, according to Vogue: “Fuchsia is the new red.” Apparently it’s fresher, younger and more modern. But say WHAAT?

In my opinion, nothing can beat a kick-ass red lipstick.

So here’s what you’ll need to achieve that perfect red pout:

Image

  • A lip conditioner of your choice (Chapstick, salve, ect.)
  • One red lipliner
  • A red lipstick that you adore
  • Optional: A gloss

Okay, so the first step is easy. Just soften up those lips! If you have any dead skin or icky stuff like that, exfoliate first with a wet cloth, toothbrush, or lip scrub.

The next part is a bit trickier. Lining your pucker and filling it in. Gahhhd, this is my least favorite part. I always end up making one edge too thin, the other too thick, or drawing outside my actual lip line. But it’s possible to achieve. Just take your time! I like to soften out the edges of my lips when I draw them, to make my lips look fuller, softer, and more youthful and plump.

So now, fill in your lips with the lipstick of your choice! You can use a brush, or apply it straight from the tube. In my opinion, lip brushes are a bit too fussy.

NOW. You’re sort of done, unless you want to apply gloss. I LOVE gloss on a red lip. It makes your lips look so juicy and seductive! If it comes in a squeezy-tube thingy, you can put a little on your finger and gently spread it on top of the lipstick. You don’t want to disturb any product underneath the gloss!

And you’re done. Congrats :}
